1d6 Magic Blades

A quick writing exercise on a Saturday morning. These can be applied to any sword or dagger, and are broadly compatible with any old school fantasy dungeon game. The effects vary from simple combat effects to wondrous and subject to unique rulings.

  1. Once a new moon, the blade can be used to slice through a door. The door is permanently destroyed, its tattered remnants taking on a paper-like texture. Can be used against magic doors, but an Open Doors check is requiredβ€”failure dulls the blade, giving a -1 to attacks and damage until sharpened again.

  2. The blade is marvelously reflective, allowing it to be used as a mirror. Can be used to see around corners, look behind you, and tame stray luscious locks. When passing a save against a gaze attack or ray by 5 or better, the wielder can force the originator to make a save against the same effect.

  3. The weapon is mostly invisible, with only a faint outline upon close inspection. Can be hidden easily for a weapon of its size, and be used to backstab a foe already aware of the wielder, but they won’t be fooled twice. Non-thieves backstab as a thief of half their hit dice.

  4. The wielder is filled with jamais vu when grasping the handle of this weapon, and distortion veils the blade. The blade can also be used to β€œeat” up to three illusions at a time, allowing them to be conjured by the wielder later.

  5. A straight cut across a flow of a liquid, such as a waterfall, separates it into two portions. The flow continues, but the severed portion can be moved elsewhere to pour out into its new location. The wielder can also use the blade to cut a portion of liquid out from a larger body for transport or storage. When separated in this way, the liquid has a thin membrane, like an egg yolk.

  6. A cursed blade imbued with a powerful but petty malice. A wielder may add up to their HD in damage dice against a foe but once, and may never do so again against a foe of that type (or faction for intelligent enemies). Those killed in this manner die with spectacular gore and violence. Members of that monster type or faction will forevermore see the wielder as an enemy on an intuitive level, and no longer check morale against them.
